Surf’s Up

I saw the second animation from Sony Pictures Animation, Surf’s Up with my friends today. Some animators at work went to see the movie at lunch yesterday and they all liked it. I think everything was solid. It probably wasn’t the greatest movie but it was good enough to get me into the story. Animation, lighting and CG water looked stunning. Great work guys who worked on it!

pirates1il3.jpg

so I watched the pirate 3 with my friend on Saturday. well, as I wrote in the last post I’m not a big pirate fan…

I didn’t really remember what happened in the first and second pirate films so I was easily lost…but VFX looked cool. I have some friends who worked on it over ILM so I tried to find them…impossible….soooo many names on the credit. You know what I mean if you already saw the film…I found one name who I knew, that’s it..

Oh, by the way, did you guys who saw the film stay after the credit? I didn’t, but I heard there was one more shot after the credit….the film was almost 3 hours long and long credit…who can stay after the credit? I had to go to the restroom…

Books

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Here are the books I got a while ago. I’m sure you know what the first book is. That is the book from Pixar exhibition at MoMA in NY that happened, I believe, in winter 2005. Unfortunately I didn’t have any luck to go and get a hold of the book at that time either. I recently heard my friend got one from his friend at Pixar and I was lucky enough to get one too!! That’s a nice art book to look at. Nice art works and sculptures, very inspiring.

The second one is the book from Disney Exhibition in Japan a while ago, well actually the exhibition has been held at different places and still running in Japan.

A little bit about the exhibition. Disney lent a lot of art works to the Disney exhibition that was held in Japan in 1960. The art works were preserved in Japan and had forgotten by people including people at Disney. Recently, the art works got discovered and proved by Disney people that they are from the exhibition almost 50 years ago. This time the exhibition has those art works discovered and recent art works from Disney.

I saw somebody at Disney blogging about the book that Disney gave to their artists. I checked the exhibition website but they didn’t sell the book online, so I asked my friend in Japan if he could get me one and I got it. Actually the website sells the book online now but would ship only in Japan…I got some for animators at work. It’s a great book and full of art works.

This is the link to the Disney Exhibition.

long time no post….

I haven’t posted anything for a while…sorry.. I wanted to put some drawings from weekly drawing class but my scanner doesn’t work since I moved in LA….

Anyway, my friend, Rico posted something interesting in his blog so I’d like to share.

He posted old Spiderman-3 trailer that someone posted onto youtube and that has a bunch of animatic stuff in it. He also said it was one shown at comic con. I found it interesting and rare to see this kind of rough stuff unless you are working for the studio that is working on the film.

It’s been 2 weeks since Flushed Away was out. I think it’s been doing ok, just Borat has been doing great job…If you go see Flushed Away, make sure not to miss Bee Movie Trailer in front of it. You can also see it on its official website.

Monster House

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

It’s late though I had a chance to watch Monster House. As many people said the story was pretty good. There were some parts where it should’ve spent more time on, but I think it was entertaining. I know it’s called “Monster House” but I thought it was totally for kids, in fact it’s a PG film. Yeah, it’s definitely a scary film for kids!!

As you might know, most character animation is motion capture. As an animator, some animation was weird or weak, it would’ve been cool if characters had been animated by good animators. However the animation of the house looked awesome!

Over all it was a good movie, pretty entertaining. but I bet I’m not the only one who still think it could’ve done in live action or keyframe animation….Is motion capture cheaper than those? Will motion capture kill our jobs?

sorry for lack of my post…

there aren’t many things about animation around me going on…

I didn’t have time to watch any of CG animated films I mentioned in my past posts…

Many of you guys who read this blog know AnimationMentor.com, don’t you? I have some friends taking it and know some animators teaching it. I just found they posted the student showcase reel on their website. well…..I may be very late finding this?!.. anyway, there are some nice animation clips in there, very inspiring! I think it’s worth checking it out.

I haven’t post my animation since…..last summer?! damn it…I really hope to start working on some test animation and put it on here.

Go check it out.

Well, I know many of you already saw this, but go check out what this year’s siggraph was like!

I haven’t had a chance to watch any of three animated films, Monster House, The Ant Bully, and Barnyard yet. I have friends who worked on those films so hope I’ll see them soon. I heard some good and not good things about them…..anyway, I really hope they will do good jobs for us.

The Ant Bully

Monday, July 31st, 2006

well, unfortunatelly I didn’t have a chance to see the ant bully though, as you guys might know it didn’t do a good job at the big box office its first weekend. Since I haven’t see it I won’t say anything about the film, but I have some friends who worked on it and know there were so many talented animators working on it…it’s very sad that the film didn’t do a good job and DNA production that created the film let almost all people go…

Those who worked on the film had or have to get new jobs. They are experienced animators but I heard some animators are still looking for jobs…I bet some studios are trying to hire animators at Siggraph now but the job market isn’t very hot.

Monster House from Imageworks came out last week and Barnyard from Omation is coming out this week. I have friends who worked on those films so I really hope they will do good jobs. However, releasing an animated film three weeks in a row would hurt themselves…don’t you think?
